What is a Vocational Return to Work Counselor (VRTWC)?
Vocational & return to work counselor (VRTWC) means a person or entity capable of assisting a person with a disability with development of a return to work strategy and whose regular duties involve the evaluation, counseling and placement of disabled persons. A VRTWC must have at least an undergraduate degree in any field and three or more year’s full time experience in conducting vocational evaluations, counseling and placement of disabled adults.

Do I Need a Counselor?
You are not required to use a VRTWC. However, you might want to use an expert who can help you choose a training program that's in step with your abilities and medical restrictions. VRTWCs are paid to help injured workers figure out a vocational goal and a return to work plan.

Who Pays the VRTWC?
In California Workers' Compensation, the responsible insurer or self-insured employer is required to pay for VRTWC services. The amount paid to a VRTWC can not be more than 10 percent of the total value of the voucher, and is part of the VR Voucher.
