Where Pharmacy Technicians Work
- Community (retail) pharmacies: chain and independent stores; fast-paced, customer-facing, heavy on insurance billing.
- Hospital (institutional) pharmacies: unit-dose and IV preparation, automated dispensing cabinets, sterile compounding.
- Mail-order and central-fill pharmacies: high-volume, automated dispensing.
- Specialty pharmacies: high-cost drugs for conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis or HIV; lots of prior authorization work.
- Long-term care pharmacies: serve nursing homes and assisted living with multi-dose packaging.
- Compounding pharmacies, nuclear pharmacies, home infusion and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs).
Hospital and specialty settings often prefer or require national certification and offer higher pay and advanced roles such as sterile compounding, pharmacy buyer or technician supervisor.
