Credentials, Licensing & Choosing a Program
Is there an EV technician license?
In most of the United States, individual auto technicians are not licensed by the state. Instead, employers look for ASE certification and manufacturer training. Some states regulate repair businesses. For example, California requires automotive repair dealers to register with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Specialty work such as smog inspection has its own state licenses. Always check your state.
Key credentials
- ASE xEV Level 1 and Level 2: online electrical safety certifications.
- ASE A6 (Electrical/Electronic Systems) and A8 (Engine Performance): required before L3.
- ASE L3 (Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist): the advanced EV credential.
- Manufacturer (OEM) certifications: brand-specific training required to work on that brand’s HV systems at a dealer or service center.
Choosing a training program
- Look for programs accredited by the ASE Education Foundation or partnered with manufacturers.
- Ask about hybrid/EV lab time, high-voltage safety training and the equipment students use.
- Ask about job placement and partner employers.
About this course: it prepares you for formal training. It does not authorize you to work on high-voltage systems.
