What an EV Technician Does
An EV technician inspects, maintains, diagnoses and repairs battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) vehicles. Much of the work is the same as on any car: tires, brakes, suspension, steering, HVAC, 12-volt electrical, and software updates. The difference is the high-voltage (HV) system: the battery pack, drive motor, inverter and charging hardware, which operate at hundreds of volts.
Typical tasks
- Routine service: tire rotations, brake inspections, cabin filters, coolant and 12-volt battery checks.
- Diagnosis with scan tools, wiring diagrams and a digital multimeter.
- Following manufacturer procedures to de-energize the HV system before certain repairs.
- Software updates and module programming.
- Explaining charging, range and maintenance to customers.
Where EV technicians work
New-car dealerships, EV-brand service centers, independent and specialty EV shops, fleet maintenance (delivery vans, transit, utilities), collision repair, and charging-network field service.
What makes a strong EV technician
A safety-first mindset, solid electrical understanding, patience with diagnosis, and comfort with computers. Shops value technicians who follow procedures exactly, every time.
