The Regulatory Baseline (California Example)
Every supervisor must understand the rules their officers work under. Requirements vary by state; California’s are a good example.
California guard registration (BSIS)
- Guards are registered by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Applicants must be at least 18 and pass a DOJ and FBI background check through Live Scan.
- Power to Arrest training must be completed before the registration is issued.
- 32 hours of security officer skills training within the first six months (16 hours within 30 days of employment and 16 more within six months if certificates were not already provided to the employer).
- 8 hours of continuing training every year.
- Carrying a firearm, baton or tear gas requires separate permits and approved training.
- Registrations must be renewed before they expire, or they can be canceled.
Why supervisors care
Supervisors often track officers’ registration and training dates, schedule annual training, and make sure no one is posted with an expired card or a duty weapon they are not permitted to carry. Check the current rules with your state regulator; BSIS publishes fact sheets on its website.
