What Security Supervisors Do
A security supervisor turns a client’s security needs into reliable, everyday performance by a team of officers. Supervisors still respond to incidents, but most of their value comes from planning, people and quality control.
Core responsibilities
- Staffing and scheduling posts so no shift goes uncovered.
- Writing, updating and enforcing post orders.
- Training, coaching and evaluating officers; handling discipline fairly and with documentation.
- Reviewing incident and daily activity reports for accuracy.
- Leading the response to serious incidents until handing off to police, fire or EMS.
- Communicating with the client: walk-throughs, trend reports and recommendations.
- Selecting and supervising security technology, increasingly including AI tools.
Typical titles
Lead officer, shift supervisor, site supervisor, field supervisor, account manager, operations manager, and later security manager or director.
The mindset shift
As an officer you are responsible for your post. As a supervisor you are responsible for every post, and for whether risk at the site is actually going down.
